Here at Highkind Cannabis Co, we have pioneered the first range of terpene infused CBD products – and are proud to have done so. Bringing their combined, and amazing, suspected benefits to everyone. But, just what are terpenes? What is CBD? What are the different types of terpenes and CBD? And lastly, what are the different effects between them all?
To put it simply, terpenes are a combination of naturally occurring carbon and hydrogen found in the trichomes (crystals) of the cannabis plant. They are responsible for the colours, aromas, and flavours produced not just in the cannabis plant, but in every plant. Such as herbs, fruits, and vegetables. They are also believed to be responsible for the many various differences in each strain as discovered in a 2011 study of the British Journal of Pharmacology (B.J.P.).
Whereas CBD (cannabidiol), is a cannabinoid. Which has only been found in the cannabis plant. Some of its suspected benefits range from physical (like reducing nausea) and mental (anti-anxiety). Before a 2008 study by the B.J.P., active cannabinoids like CBD were believed to be the only property to bind to the endocannabinoid receptors of our brains.
Both terpenes and cannabinoids like CBD have their own suspected benefits and purposes, as well as, amplify the other’s – creating the synergistic “entourage effect” as shown in some studies by the British Journal of Pharmacology. However, what about their specific, and various, differences?
The Different Types of Terpenes & Their Effects
There are over 100 different types of terpenes found in the cannabis plant, each with their own benefits, that are also found in various other plants as well. Depending on the plant, they could have any combination of terpenes, of varying levels. With the handful of terpenes that have higher levels, being the ones whose effects you see.
However, that all being said, there are 5 main terpene profiles that are commonly found in, and contribute to the effects of, high CBD cannabis. But, which ones are suspected to do what, with so little research into the subject?
Sleepy Terpenes VS Day-Time Strains
The terpenes found in the cannabis plant can be put into two main categories: “sleepy” terpenes, and “day-time” strains. And it’s exactly as it sounds. They either give you a sleepy, sedative, relaxed feeling – or a feeling of having your energy boosted, as well as, your mood and focus improved. Which ones are which? And what are their suspected effects and benefits that they bring to the table?
Sleepy Terpenes
- Linalool – Will typically have a lavender-like aroma. And just like lavender, linalool has been suspected to show properties and effects such as: reducing anxiety. In some cases. Some people even use it in topical homoeopathic remedies for skin care to take care of issues like acne and other skin issues.
- Mycrene – Has an earthy, musky, and lightly fruity aroma – sometimes clove-like even. When combined with THC, it can incapacitate you but, when combined with only CBD it can just gives you a nice relaxed feeling instead.
Hybrid Terpenes
- Pinene – If this terpene’s name wasn’t a dead giveaway, it gives off a nice piney smell. This one can be either a “sleepy” or “day-time” terpene depending on a couple of different factors. One being if it’s an alpha-pinene (a-pinene) or a beta-pinene (b-pinene). The other on how much is really in the balance of the full-spectrum CBD you’re using. Some of the suspected benefits are: memory improvement. alertness, increase in general energy levels, improved focus, suppressed activity, and increased sleep duration.
- Humulene – This terpene has a hops or coriander smell to it. In some studies, it’s been suspected to suppress appetite. As well as, have anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and pain relief properties.
Day-Time Strains
- Limonene – Has a citrusy-type aroma – from lemon to orange. Who wouldn’t love it? Allegedly the benefits of this fun terpene are mood improvement, heartburn and acid reflux relief, anti-anxiety and anti-depressant, nausea relief and helps the immune system. Which if you have an immune system disorder, this may be the one for you.
- Caryophyllene – Will have a herby or peppery smell – just like oregano, black pepper and the other various herbs this one is found in. The most common caryophyllene found is beta-caryophyllene. In multiple studies by the British Journal of Pharmacology, they have discovered many suspected benefits of this particular terpene. Some studies have shown that this terpene theoretically has gastro-protective properties and attaches to the CB2 Receptors in our brains.
As you can see, terpenes have a lot to offer, and it makes a lot of sense given all the holistic aromatherapy options there are out there. But, if terpenes are the main cause of the various effects… what about CBD and the different types and forms it comes in? How do they play a role?
The Different Types of CBD
and Their Effects
While further research is being done into terpenes – more specifically the ones from the cannabis plant – the CBD cannabinoid does have its own role and alleged benefits. Studies have shown it to have the potential for both mental, and physical benefits such as anti-anxiety benefits, pain relief benefits and more.
In theory, the type of CBD you use, and the form it comes in will play a major role in how well it will work. And it will vary from person to person even based off of each person’s unique endocannabinoid system. But, just what are the different types of CBD?
Full Spectrum VS Broad Spectrum VS CBD Isolates
There are 3 main types of CBD you will see out and about – full spectrum, broad spectrum, and isolates. And it can be confusing and overwhelming trying to choose one. However, there is a major difference in their strength and effectiveness depending on which type you choose. To put it simply, 100 milligrams of synthetic, single-molecule CBD? Is not equivalent to 100 milligrams of a CBD-rich whole plant cannabis extract.
- Full Spectrum CBD – Full-spectrum essentially means the product is derived from the whole plant. A full spectrum product typically contains all compounds found naturally occurring in the plant. Including terpenes, essential oils, and other cannabinoids – that work together to magnify the therapeutic benefits of each individual cannabinoid.
It’s suspected that this is going to be the best type to choose if you want as much of the benefits and effects as possible. Not singling out a single part of the plant, or eliminating a portion. However, in the UK and US especially, any legally sold CBD product will contain little to no THC – and be within the legal amounts. This way you avoid getting the “high” feeling you get from THC, yet still, get amazing benefits and the “entourage effect”.
- Broad Spectrum CBD – Broad spectrum CBD products are a happy little in-between of Isolate and Full Spectrum. Just like full spectrum products, the other compounds found within the plant are preserved in the extract. However, just like in a CBD Isolate, the THC compound is completely removed.
Broad spectrum CBD products can produce the “entourage effect” as they contain as many compounds of the plant possible, without the THC. Just not to the extent a full spectrum product can.
- CBD Isolates – A CBD isolate will be the purest form of CBD you can get. As, scientifically speaking, an isolate is the purest form of a compound. Which is produced by singularly extracting that compound from its environment. Then isolating it from all other compounds of course. However, you will not get the “entourage” effect by solely using an isolate.
Isolates, and other CBD products, are typically extracted from hemp as the hemp plant has basically 0 THC, although may contain some traces. Including full spectrum and broad spectrum CBD products.
The Different Forms of CBD
Just like with CBD’s cousin THC, there have been many different ways to consume the supplement introduced over the years. We here at Highkind Cannabis Co ®, have quite a few to choose from ourselves. When facing so many options, it can be difficult to choose. Let’s start with:
CBD Pens VS CBD Crumble
- CBD Crumble Products – Also known as “Cannabinoid Crumble”, crumble products can be dabbed or vaped but, not added to foods. Our crumble options contain approximately 75%-85% CBD and 0% THC, and include terpene profiles.
- CBD Vape Pen Products – Our CBD vape pen option contains 5%-50% CBD distillate, and 0% THC, and include terpene profiles. Depending on the cartridge chosen – you can even refill it with our CBD oil for vape pens (AKA CBD vape oil) when needed – or just interchange the cartridge. This makes this a very convenient product that can be brought and utilized anywhere.
CBD Oral Paste VS CBD Oral Oils/Tinctures
- CBD Oral Paste – This type of product must be taken orally, and cannot be dabbed. Our oral pastes (AKA CBD Extracts) come in a syringe and consist of 40% CBD oils, and 0% THC – as well as include terpene profiles.
- CBD Oral Oils/Tinctures – Also known as “Oral CBD”, any CBD oil or tincture that can be taken orally – must only be taken orally, and cannot be dabbed or vaped. Ours contains: 5-10% CBD oils and 0% THC, as well as terpene profiles.
CBD Distillates VS CBD Crystals
- CBD Distillates – Distillates are a form of CBD isolates. But, are more of a broad spectrum type product when dealing with us here at Highkind Cannabis Co. As we incorporate a full spectrum of different cannabinoids like CBD, CBG, and CBC into our distillate products. Distillates can be dabbed, vaped, or added to e-liquid. However, they cannot be added to foods. Ours contains 75% CBD and 0% THC. While this particular product may not be supplemented by our terpenes – they can be at the client’s request.
- CBD Crystals – Also known as CBD Isolate. This is a CBD product you’re going to receive CBD in its purest form in as there are no other traces of cannabinoids besides CBD in it. Ours, in particular, contains 90% CBD, and 0% THC. Just like with the CBD distillate, CBD crystals can be dabbed vaped or added to e-liquid. However, cannot be taken orally.
Bringing it All Together and Which Ones Would be Best for You?
As you can see, utilising terpene-infused CBD supplements have great, and varying alleged benefits. All depending on the cannabinoid and terpene profile of the product – and your own endocannabinoid make-up.
A day-time strain would be better for when you need to be awake and improve focus and alertness. While a night-time or “sleepy-time” strain would be best for night -time to help you relax or with insomnia. While a hybrid should theoretically do both.
So, what’s really the best one for you? The CBD supplement product with the cannabinoid and terpene profile, type, and form that works for your needs.
** Please Note: Depending on the manufacturer/supplier, of any CBD Product, the CBD and THC percentage levels may vary.
