Yes, CBD is legal in the UK – and for good reason – CBD is thought to be an effective way of treating a number of health issues, including anxiety and depression. To know where you stand with CBD, here’s a rundown of its legality and its purpose.
What is CBD?
The cannabis plant is made of over 100 different cannabinoids (i.e. compounds) that alter the release of chemicals in the brain. The main two active compounds are CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which have very different effects:
- CBD is a non-intoxicating compound (i.e. it will not make you ‘high’) but it supports the release of endorphins and other stress-response hormones that can help with depression and anxiety.
- THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is a psychoactive compound of the cannabis plant that makes you ‘high’. It is used in a number of countries across the world as a medicine and in a number of others for recreational purposes. However, it is an illegal substance in the UK as of the 1971 Controlled Substances Act.
Is CBD legal in the UK?
Products containing CBD are legal as long as they have a THC content below 0.02% and the CBD that is present in the product has been obtained from an EU-certified hemp plant. Whilst, it never held an ‘illegal status’, CBD has been fully legal to possess, buy and sell as of 2018.
Hemp is a species of the cannabis plant that has been used for over 50,000 years to make items ranging from clothes, textiles and paper, to paint, biodegradable plastics and building materials.
